At Connaught School for girls the intent of teaching Physical Education is to give students the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact on their own physical health and well-being. We want all students to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills that will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem-solving. It can teach students to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual, and team based physical activities.
PE at Connaught School is taught by PE-qualified PE teachers. Students have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a supportive environment where effort, as well as success, is recognised. Students are encouraged to participate in exercise throughout the day during PE lessons, clubs, and special events.
At Connaught School, the PE curriculum is structured to provide a range of sports experiences during which every child participates to develop their skills and learning through competitive, team, and individual sports. Through our provision children can aim to flourish at sports in which they have a particular interest or flair. Students with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding, and motivation.
We teach the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximize learning for all children.
Children gain experience in a variety of fundamental skills. This has a focus on agility, balance, coordination, and fitness. Children take part in individual skills, group skills, and team games, using PE equipment appropriate for their age.
At Key Stage 3 students study a wide variety of different sports that help to work on their teamwork, communication skills, technique, tactics, and various other elements of sports. Students will also learn how to outwit their opponents, as well as how to improve their skills individually.
The main focus of KS3 is for students to understand the basic techniques and skills that are needed in order to play a game in their particular sport. They will be given the opportunity to find out how the techniques and skills help to improve the way in which the game is played. Use technical terminology with confidence accurately and precisely, building up an extended specialist vocabulary; can apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of PE, including measuring, timing, estimating, and analyzing data. Attend extra-curricular sporting clubs and competitions, and have an opportunity to represent their school and community. Develop a lifelong love of sports and physical exercise. Develop their leadership qualities and skills through sports. Have a sound understanding of different sports, and their origins, including British and worldwide sporting role models. Are prepared to transition from KS3 to KS4 with the skills, knowledge, character, and leadership to excel in KS4.
