What is the aim and vision of Mathematics at CSFG?
We aim to equip all students at Connaught with numeracy skills in order to solve mathematical problems. In doing so we want our students to experience the beauty, power, and enjoyment of mathematics, which ignites curiosity and prepares them well for the next stage in their career.
We aim to achieve this by:
- Providing our students with opportunities to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Creating a culture of questioning and feeding the natural inquisitiveness of students.
- Having an appreciation of numbers and the application of mathematics in real life, including mental calculations as well as written procedures.
- Ensuring students are challenged and stretched by developing their leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative, and communication skills in order to provide foundations for every aspect of school life
What does the learning look like over the five years at CSFG?
In Years 7 and 8, all students follow the same Key stage 3 programme of study to ensure a smooth transition from Primary school to Secondary and to fill the gaps in knowledge and skills that some may have.
In Years 9, 10 and 11, students follow the Key Stage 4 Edexcel programme of study and are grouped according to ability and progress following either the Foundation or the Higher pathway.
As an additional qualification, those students who enjoy the challenge have the opportunity to sit the Edexcel Algebra Level 3 exam.
What does this look like at the end of the five years?
-
- Students sit formative assessments at the end of each half term as well as Summative assessments at the end of each term which track their progress.
- Students are provided instant feedback during lessons where the teacher goes through each question in detail.
- Students are provided a question-by-question analysis to inform them of their gaps and targeted revision linked to Hegarty Maths clips and questions.
- Teachers use this analysis grid to inform them of what topics they need to re-address as a whole class as well as review any misconceptions.
- Data is extracted and parents are informed of the progress.
- We use pupil voice, book reviews, lesson observations as well as our department MER to inform us of how successful our curriculum is.
- We monitor the progress of students against their minimum expected grades.
